To file a PIN Application for Form 941/940, do the following:
- Log into eSmart Payroll
- Click 'Start a New Return'
- Click 'Form 941/940 PIN Application' to begin the online payroll form
Note: Application for a PIN is used for e-filing Form 941 and Form 940.
PIN Application for Form 941/940 Information
PIN Application for Form 941/940 is used to apply for a PIN from the IRS to participate in the e-file program for Form 941 and Form 940.
Currently, the IRS issues two types of PINs, "Business Taxpayer" and "Reporting Agents". Different application processes are used for these two types of PINs.
A Business Taxpayer can prepare and e-file a PIN Application at our website directly. The IRS will mail a PIN to the contact person of the Business Taxpayer in a few weeks. The Business Taxpayer can then start to e-file Form 941.
A Reporting Agent can prepare a PIN Application at our website, but he/she needs to print the PIN Application and mail it with a completed Form 9041 and copies of Form 8655 to the IRS. The IRS will mail a test PIN to the contact person in a few weeks. The Reporting Agent is required to complete a test transmission before a production PIN is issued.
